  8. 8. Who we are

1. Barry is an AI

Barry is an AI. Not a person, not a member of staff using his name.

He is not a partner, not a friend, not a therapist and not a care provider. He can be wrong, and confidently so.

2. What this service is not

  1. Matched by Barry is not a medical, psychological, crisis or emergency service.
  2. We do not follow your conversation live. We do not keep watch for emergencies, and we cannot call for help on your behalf. If you are in an emergency, call 112.
  3. What you write does pass an automatic check. It looks for signs involving minors. It does not read how you are doing, it makes no diagnosis, and it alerts nobody.
  4. We do not check who anyone is. There is no identity check and no background check.

3. Where you see that you are dealing with AI

In the conversation you see that you are talking to an AI.

In the chat on the website, too, it says at the top, before your first question, that you are talking to an AI, and the label AI matchmaker stands beside Barry's name.

4. The AI portrait

Other members do not see your photo. They see a stylised portrait that a model makes from it.

Wherever you are shown a portrait, it says that it was made by AI. The file itself also carries a machine-readable marking that says the image was made by a model: the Content Credentials (C2PA) the model writes into it, together with an invisible watermark, or for the oldest portraits a marking under the IPTC standard. A program that reads Content Credentials or the IPTC standard shows it, so you can check outside our app too that an image of ours was made by AI.

5. What is assessed automatically

The app decides entirely automatically who Barry suggests to you.

For that we use the data in your profile, your preferences, your photo and what you told Barry yourself. Which data we process for it, and how long it is kept, is in the Privacy statement.

A number of conditions have to be right in both directions: age, gender, distance, language, and whether one of you has blocked the other.

Your photo is assessed automatically too, and that assessment helps decide who you get to see. The assessment is in your export. You may object to it: we then stop the assessment, erase what it produced and put you forward without it. We infer no origin, faith, political opinion, health or sexual orientation from your photo.

6. Your rights here

If a decision about you is made entirely automatically, you can ask for human intervention, give your point of view and contest the decision.

How you do that, what further rights you have and where you can lodge a complaint is in the Privacy statement.

7. What we stand behind, and what we do not

We do not promise that every answer from Barry is correct, that every suggestion hits the mark, or that an automatic check notices every signal.

Our liability is governed by the Terms of use. Your statutory rights as a consumer continue to apply in full.
